HSK 3.0 · Band 3 of 3

The HSK advanced band

The advanced band is HSK 3.0 levels 7, 8, and 9, and it is structurally unlike the two below it. Rather than three separate tiers with three word lists, levels 7 to 9 are administered as a single combined exam over one shared list of 5,606 words: literary vocabulary, specialist and academic terms, idioms, and formal register. Clearing it takes the cumulative total to 10,969 words and roughly 2,970 characters, and approaches the range of an educated native reader. Unsure whether you are ready for it? Quick answer

What is the HSK advanced band, and how many words is it?

The HSK advanced band is HSK 3.0 levels 7 to 9, given as one combined exam over a single 5,606-word list. It brings the cumulative total to 10,969 words and about 2,970 characters, and pushes recognition of everyday spoken Chinese to roughly 77.5%. The remaining gap to 100% is mostly rare, specialized, and proper-noun vocabulary that even native speakers meet unevenly.

The band doubles your vocabulary yet lifts spoken coverage only about 3.6 points, because everyday speech is carried by common words you already know. Its payoff is reading, register, and precision, not conversational token count. See the full ladder.

HSK 3.0 does not split this band into three separate published word lists the way it splits the lower six levels. Levels 7, 8, and 9 share one vocabulary list and one paper, and your level within the band is decided by your score on that combined exam, not by which list you studied.

What you can actually do at the advanced band

Read literature and professional textsThe band adds the literary, formal, and specialist vocabulary needed for novels, essays, contracts, and technical or academic writing, well beyond the everyday register of the intermediate band.
Handle academic and specialized discourseFollow lectures, argue a position in formal Chinese, and work with domain terminology. This is the level aimed at university study and professional work conducted in Chinese.
Approach educated-native rangeRecognizing every word in the band means recognizing roughly 77.5% of everyday speech, with the remaining words being the rare and specialized ones native speakers also meet unevenly.

How long the advanced band takes

honest estimate

At a steady 10 to 20 genuinely new words a day, the 5,606 words of the advanced band take roughly 9 to 18 months on top of the two bands below it, making it the longest single stretch of the HSK ladder by word count. The real calendar usually runs longer still: advanced words are lower-frequency, so you meet them far less often in natural reading, and they need more deliberate exposure to stick. This estimate counts new-word acquisition only, not grammar, reading practice, review load, or handwriting, so treat it as a floor. Halve your daily words and the calendar roughly doubles.

The path into this band

Coming inEnter after the intermediate band (levels 4 to 6). You arrive recognizing about 73.9% of everyday speech, with the broad practical fluency the intermediate band claims.
Where to workWork through the combined HSK 7-9 word table in frequency order, and lean heavily on real reading, since natural exposure to these lower-frequency words is what fixes them in memory.
Work the planThe advanced study plan turns the combined list into a reading-heavy daily routine, since natural exposure is what fixes these lower-frequency words.
The top of the ladderThere is no band above this one. Levels 7 to 9 are the ceiling of the HSK 3.0 scheme, so the path out is native material and specialized study rather than another exam tier.
