The HSK intermediate band
The intermediate band is HSK 3.0 levels 4, 5, and 6. This is where most self-studiers stall: it adds 3,154 words on top of the beginner band, bringing the cumulative total to 5,363, and the topics shift from survival phrases to opinions, comparisons, news, and abstract ideas. Each new word here buys less raw comprehension than a beginner word did, because the highest-frequency vocabulary is already behind you, so the band rewards persistence more than any other. Quick answer
What is the HSK intermediate band, and how many words is it?
The HSK intermediate band is HSK 3.0 levels 4 to 6: 3,154 new words on top of the beginner band, 5,363 words cumulatively, and about 1,799 characters. It is where vocabulary volume starts to bite and many learners plateau. Completing it lifts recognition of everyday spoken Chinese from roughly 66.8% to 73.9%.
Notice how the coverage gain slows: the beginner band added tens of percentage points, this band adds only about 7.1 more, for twice the words. That is the frequency curve, not wasted effort: rarer words are what let you read and follow real media. See the full ladder.

What you can actually do at the intermediate band
| Express opinions, not just facts | Compare things, agree and disagree, give reasons, and talk about news and current events rather than only your immediate surroundings. Level 4 is the doorway to connected paragraphs. |
| Read with a dictionary, then without | Simplified articles become readable with modest lookup help at level 4, and by level 6 much native writing and most everyday media are within reach without constant lookups. |
| Handle work and study | By level 6 the band claims broad practical fluency: following films and broadcasts, structuring a spoken argument, and expressing yourself on most everyday and professional topics. |
How long the intermediate band takes
honest estimateAt a steady 10 to 20 genuinely new words a day, the 3,154 new words of the intermediate band take roughly 5 to 10 months on top of the beginner band. In practice it feels slower than beginner even at the same pace, for two reasons: there are more new words, and your daily spaced-repetition review stack is now large, so a bigger share of each session goes to holding old words rather than adding new ones. This estimate counts new-word acquisition only, not grammar, listening, review load, or handwriting, so read it as a floor. Halve your daily words and the calendar roughly doubles.
The path into and out of this band
| Coming in | Enter after the beginner band (levels 1 to 3). You arrive already recognizing about 66.8% of everyday speech, which is why intermediate can feel like slow going despite real progress. |
| Where to work | Move through the HSK 4, HSK 5, and HSK 6 word tables in frequency order, and pair vocabulary with real reading and listening so the abstract words stick. |
| Work the plan | The intermediate study plan sequences these levels into a sustainable daily routine with reviews first, so the larger word load stays manageable. |
| Moving on | Finishing level 6 opens the advanced band (levels 7 to 9), a single combined exam over 5,606 further words, including literary and specialist terms. |
