HSK 3.0 · Band 1 of 3
The HSK beginner band
The beginner band is the ground floor of the 2021 HSK 3.0 standard: levels 1, 2, and 3, taken together. It carries the 2,209 highest-frequency words in Chinese, from greetings and numbers up to the vocabulary you need to hold a basic conversation. Almost every learner starts here, and because the most common words are packed into these three levels, this band buys more comprehension per word than either band above it. Quick answer
What is the HSK beginner band, and how many words is it?
The HSK beginner band covers HSK 3.0 levels 1 to 3: 2,209 words and about 899 characters in all. It is the foundation of the nine-level standard and the highest-value vocabulary you can learn, because the most frequent words sit here. Knowing every word in the band means recognizing roughly 66.8% of the running words in everyday spoken Chinese.
That 66.8% is token coverage, not comprehension: the most frequent words carry a large share of speech, but you still meet unknown words in most sentences. Coverage climbs steeply inside this band, from about 50.4% at level 1 to 66.8% by level 3. See the full ladder.

What you can actually do at the beginner band
| Survive daily life | Introduce yourself, count and handle money, tell time, order food, buy tickets, and ask for and follow simple directions. These are the highest-frequency exchanges, and the band is built around them. |
| Hold a basic conversation | By level 3, HSK 3.0 makes speaking mandatory, so the band expects short back-and-forth on familiar topics: work, study, travel, and small talk, not just recognition. |
| Read supported text | Menus, signs, chat messages, and pinyin-supported material become readable. Long native articles do not yet, since roughly a third of the running words in real speech are still outside the band. |
How long the beginner band takes
honest estimateAt a steady 10 to 20 genuinely new words a day, the 2,209 words of the beginner band take roughly 4 to 7 months to acquire. That figure counts new-word learning only. It does not include grammar, listening practice, the daily review load that spaced repetition adds as your pile of known words grows, or handwriting, all of which real study also carries, so treat it as a floor rather than a finish line. The pace assumption is stated on purpose: halve your daily words and you roughly double the calendar.
The path into and out of this band
| Coming in | This is the starting band, so there is no level below it. If you already know some Chinese, the placement test estimates where inside the band to begin instead of grinding from word one. |
| Where to start | Begin with the HSK 1 word table, drilled in frequency order, then move to HSK 2 and HSK 3. |
| Work the plan | Turn this band into an ordered daily routine with the beginner study plan: a realistic pace, reviews first, and a clear finish line. |
| Moving on | Finishing level 3 opens the intermediate band (levels 4 to 6), where vocabulary volume roughly doubles and abstract topics arrive. |
