Start from the word count, not a round number
A level is defined by the vocabulary it certifies, so that is where any real timeline starts. Under the new nine-level HSK 3.0 standard, the cumulative word counts are 2,209 at Level 3 (the top of the beginner band), 3,181 at Level 4 (the entry to intermediate), and 5,363 at Level 6 (the top of intermediate). These counts are computed from our shipped 3.0 word list, so they match the tables you actually drill here rather than a rounded syllabus target.
Divide the word count by a daily new-word rate and you get the number of study days, before any days off. The table below does exactly that for the three most-asked milestones, at three sustainable paces.

Those figures assume you start from zero and study most days. If you already know some Chinese, subtract the words you have. A short placement check tells you where you actually stand, so you count only the words still ahead of you instead of restarting the clock at Level 1.
Why the vocabulary timeline is a floor, not a promise
The word math gives you a clean lower bound. Real learners take longer, for two honest reasons, and pretending otherwise is how these estimates lose their credibility.
The old HSK 2.0 numbers are much smaller
If your target program or test center still uses the six-level HSK 2.0 exam, the word counts, and therefore the timelines, are far lower. HSK 2.0 HSK 3 needed 600 words, HSK 4 needed 1,200, and HSK 6 topped out at 5,000. So “reach HSK 4” can mean 1,200 words or 3,181 words depending purely on which standard is in play.
