The HSK beginner study plan
The beginner band is the highest-value stretch of the whole ladder, because the most common words are packed into it. This plan is the order to attack it in: place yourself, work the levels 1 to 3 tables in frequency order, and hold a daily target you can actually keep. For what the band contains rather than how to work it, see the beginner band overview.

Quick answer
What is a good HSK beginner study plan, and how long does it take?
Place yourself, then work the levels 1, 2, and 3 word tables in frequency order at 5 to 10 new words a day, clearing reviews before adding new cards. The 2,209 beginner words take roughly 7 to 15 months at that pace, and finishing them means recognizing about 66.8% of everyday spoken Chinese.
Coverage climbs steeply here, from about 50.4% at level 1 to 66.8% by level 3, which is why the beginner band feels like the fastest progress you will ever make. See the full ladder.

The timeline, and the assumption behind it
honest estimateAt 10 new words a day the 2,209 beginner words take about 7 months; at a gentler 5 a day, about 15 months. That is pure new-word acquisition arithmetic (2,209 divided by your daily rate, over roughly 30.4 days a month). It deliberately excludes grammar, listening, the review load that compounds as your known-word pile grows, and handwriting, all of which real study also carries. Halve your daily words and you roughly double the calendar, so the honest lever is consistency, not intensity.
The one rule that makes the plan work
| Reviews before new words | Clear your due reviews first, then add new cards only if you have capacity. Skipping reviews to chase new words is the most common way beginners stall: the list grows faster than memory holds it. |
| Recognition is enough here | In the beginner band, aim to read every word on sight. That alone unlocks menus, signs, and chat. Do not slow the whole plan down demanding perfect recall of every word yet. |
| Speaking joins at level 3 | HSK 3.0 makes speaking mandatory from level 3, so near the end start recalling and saying the everyday words, the numbers, directions, and small talk you will actually use. |
What "done" with the beginner band means
Done is not "finished the level 3 list once." It means you recognize essentially all 2,209 beginner words on sight, and can hold a basic back-and-forth on familiar topics. The honest check is the placement test: if it lands you at or above level 3, the band has stuck. That opens the intermediate plan, where vocabulary volume roughly doubles and the words turn abstract.
